Time to rebuild
These past few days have been hard. It’s been hard on my city, it’s been hard for so many individuals and families; some strangers and some dear to me. It’s been hard to watch. Houston and surrounding areas just went through massive flooding that destroyed homes, businesses and left some with nothing. At first many of us took it lightly, not because we were immature, we had been through major flooding before. Harvey though… it was different.
In the past few days I felt mainly helpless, helpless because I didn’t actually own a huge truck to go help. Helpless because I don’t own a boat or a canoe or any sort of thing like that. Helpless because I wish I would’ve had the resources to help those in need. This is why building a business/something big is crucial. Not for the money or the glory that comes with it but more so to help and serve. I saw this example in Mattress Mack the owner and founder of one of the biggest furniture stores in Houston, he said something in an interview that impacted me. “Service above self.” He built a huge business so that one day he would be able to do what he did for hundreds of people, GIVE.
I saw such goodness in people these past few days, I saw friends that I have on facebook that I don’t keep in touch with helping people ALL DAY, people they didn’t even know. I saw people using their creativity towards good and donate all profits to survivors. I saw people literally, LITERALLY giving themselves to serve others. The overwhelming amount of people that wanted to volunteer, from young to old. EVERYBODY I knew wanted to be a part of the cause. Whether it was sharing posts on FB to make others aware of someone that had a rescue boat, to letting people know what shelters needed in terms of donations. Now more than ever I felt so proud to be an American, a Texan and a Houstonian.
This event will change and has changed so many of us. Now it’s time to rebuild. Now it’s time to yes, deal with the aftermath but rebuild. Though some of us have lost it all, we will learn to get back up and move forward. We will learn to lend a helping hand to our neighbor. Most importantly though we will learn that if we can get through something like this, we can get through anything.
With all the events going on I was finally able to go out today and snap some pictures outside. It was a beautiful day today. It’s always a beautiful day, to realize that we’re all blessed beyond measure. Praise God for that.
